What's FREE at Menards this week...
Menards has a FABULOUS rebate program. In the Menards weekly ad there are almost always items that are free (or cheap) after mail-in-rebate (MIR). The mail-in-rebate comes in the form of a Menards store credit check. The check can then be used to purchase other items at Menards. They have a really quick turn around time too. I have never waited much over a month to get my rebate check. You can easily roll the checks. I recently bought cat litter bags and doggie poop bags that were all free after rebate. When the rebate arrived, Menards had a TIGI hair product sale (they were free after rebate also) so I used the rebate check to buy the TIGI products (didn't have to pay a single cent out of pocket for them). Now I'm waiting on the TIGI rebate check to arrive. It is a fun way to stock up on household necessities or stock pile Christmas gifts without spending a lot of money!

Ad Match-Ups!
What are "ad match-ups"? Stores that put out a weekly print ad give couponers the opportunity to get the most for their money by matching their coupons with items that are on sale during a particular week. Stores that do not put out an ad (Woodman's for example) make it much harder for you to coupon effieciently. Weekly print ads also allow you to plan ahead and know exactly how much you will be spending!
Printing Coupons!
I love being able to print coupons at home. I love that I can print coupons specific to items that I actually buy and there is no having to wait until Sunday to see what coupons might be in the paper! The one disadvantage of printing your own coupons is that it does consume paper and ink. Here are a couple things I do to minimize my costs when printing coupons:
1. I print all of my coupons in black and white.
2. Coupons can be printed on any paper. Regular copy paper can start to get expensive if you start printing a lot of coupons. One trick I have found is printing on the back side of junk mail or other paper that you would normally recycle. I keep a bin for scratch paper (mostly handouts that get sent home from school with my kids) and print coupons on the back.
3. Refill your ink cartridges yourself. I steered clear of this option for a long time, worried that I wouldn't be able to refill them or that I would do something wrong. A few months ago, I decided to toughen up and try it out. All I can say is, "Why the heck did I wait for so long!". Refilling most ink cartridges (except for Cannon) is very simple. I bought a refill kit at Walgreens for $16 (I'm sure you could find them much cheaper elsewhere but I had Register Rewards to use up, so I didn't technically pay money out of pocket for it). The instructions were easy and I was able to fill my cartridge with no problem. The kit has enough ink in it for me to fill my black cartridge probably 5 or 6 times! That is a huge savings from paying $25 for a new cartridge!

Couponing 101: Getting Started!
A lot of us have seen TLC's Extreme Couponing and wonder how in the world these people are getting these deals. All I have to say is "Turn off the TV". The deals being shown on Extreme Couponing are NOT normal transactions. The people on the show are asked to created the biggest, craziest shopping trips that they can. Watching the show will make a newbie couponer feel more than overwhelmed...and who needs 500 packages of Tic Tacs anyway?

*Sunday Newpaper Inserts
-The Dollar Store sells the Sunday paper for $1 rather than the $2 newsstand price
-Ask friends, family, neighbors, co-workers for their inserts
-Check the local coffee shops or breakfast places on Sunday morning
*Trade coupons with friends, what you won't use for what they won't use
*Pick up coupons at the store
-coupon tear pads (only take as many as you are going to use)
-peelies (do not peel coupons off items you are not going to purchase)
*Print coupons from online sources – most sites allow you to print the coupon twice (just hit the back button 3 times after the first print and the coupon will print a 2nd time)
*Suck Up Letters – write to companies and tell them how much you like their product. Success rate varies with this method.
*Facebook – lots of companies offer high value printable coupons by “liking” them on Facebook
*All You Magazine – You can only find this at Walmart (sells for $2.49). I have been able to find yearly subscriptions for it for as low as $1 and issue though.

Step 3: Start Shopping! (but remember, start slow).
Couponing is different at all stores. Be sure to be familiar with the coupon policies at each store you shop at. I suggest printing out a copy of the store coupon policy and keeping it with you when you shop. The most successful couponer makes a calculated plan before heading to the store. Having a specific list, matched with available coupons will make your shopping experience much more pleasant.
